Schoeman Oosthuizen matriculated at Randburg High School and went on to obtain a B.Comm (Mathematics) degree at the University of Stellenbosch. After completing his National Service he enrolled at the Law Faculty of the University of Port Elizabeth where he obtained his B.Juris and LLB suma cum laude, each year being appointed the best student in his year. He was also awarded honorary colours by the University.

Thereafter, he completed his articles of clerkship and joined the legal practice. Whilst practising as an attorney, he obtained the degree of LLM in Labour Law at the University of Port Elizabeth and held the position of part-time lecturer in the Department of Mercantile Law. During 1995, he also obtained a certificate in Constitutional Litigation at the University of South Africa and regularly sat as an assessor in the Labour Appeal Court. He obtained a certificate in Corporate Law and a certificate in Business Rescue in 2014. In 2017 he obtained his doctors degree in Company Law at the University of Pretoria, and was awarded academic honorary colours.

Schoeman has been practising as an attorney for more than 30 years and specializes in Corporate and Commercial Law, Dispute Resolution, Employment Law, and Administrative Law. He is also an admitted notary public and conveyancer. As part of the firm's social contribution he also sits as a Commissioner in the Small Claims Court.
